Gold is the market where prop firm leverage gets cut the hardest. Plenty of firms that give 1:100 on forex drop XAUUSD to 1:20 or even 1:10, and some only mention it deep in the FAQ. Why Prop Firms Cut Gold Leverage
Gold moves fast. A $30 to $50 swing in one session isn’t unusual, and around CPI or FOMC it can move that much in minutes. With high leverage, a trader can blow through the daily loss limit on a single candle, and the firm’s liquidity provider charges more to cover that risk. Lower leverage is how firms protect themselves.
It’s also why gold is where the leverage number matters most. One standard lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces. If gold is at $4,000, that’s $400,000 of exposure. At 1:100 you need $4,000 of margin. At 1:20 you need $20,000. On a $25K account, 1:20 means one lot is basically all you can open.
Gold Leverage vs Your Drawdown
Higher gold leverage doesn’t change how much you can lose. On a $100K account with a 5% daily limit, one lot of gold moving $50 against you costs $5,000, and that’s your whole day gone whatever the leverage. Leverage only matters when margin is what’s stopping you from opening the trade. For most gold traders, the drawdown runs out first.

Use the table to build a shortlist, then check three things on each plan page: the XAUUSD spread, whether news trading is allowed (gold reacts to almost every US release), and whether gold has its own leverage or sits inside commodities.
